Shillong: A potential fuel crisis in Shillong was averted on Saturday after a compromise was reached between the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union and the East Khasi Hills administration in Meghalaya.

The union had threatened to halt the supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders to protest no-entry restrictions imposed on oil tankers within the city limits between 1 pm and 5 pm. They argued these restrictions caused delays and difficulties for tanker crews.

Following discussions with the union, the East Khasi Hills DC issued a new directive allowing tankers to operate during adjusted hours: 10 am to 1 pm and after 4 pm.

This aims to minimize disruption during peak school traffic times. Additionally, tankers must follow a designated route using the Shillong Bypass to avoid traffic congestion on the Umiam Bridge, which is currently under repair.

While the protest caused temporary disruption, petrol pump owners assured the public there was enough fuel stock to last until Monday.

They estimate nearly half of the city's pumps will still have supplies to meet demand even on Tuesday.
