Guwahati: Meghalaya has reported a growing number of HIV/AIDS cases, with over 10,000 people testing positive, including 500 children.

Health authorities have expressed concern, with East Jaintia Hills district continuing to report the highest number of infections.

Most of the HIV-positive children come from economically disadvantaged families, highlighting the social challenges linked to the health crisis. An official said, “More than 10,000 people have tested positive, and it is worrying that 500 of them are children.”

The Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) noted that unprotected heterosexual activity remains the primary mode of transmission.

Officials noted that hesitation to get tested delays detection and treatment, hindering timely intervention.

Ahead of World AIDS Day on December 1, Dr KL Iawbor, project director of MACS, emphasised the need for collective responsibility. “This virus is very dangerous, and it is the responsibility of each one of us to stop its transmission so we can make our state and country HIV-free by 2030,” he said.

MACS has been conducting awareness and screening campaigns to curb the spread of HIV. Recent drives tested 6,882 people, of whom 24 were confirmed HIV-positive. These efforts included outreach programs, voluntary testing, and targeted referrals.

Focused outreach among high-risk groups and the general population has been effective in identifying new infections. According to Dr Iawbor, “Eighty-seven per cent of cases were detected during outreach programmes among high-risk groups and the general public.”

To mark World AIDS Day, MACS will host a bikers’ rally and several public events on December 1.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will attend as the chief guest, along with cabinet ministers, MLAs from East Khasi Hills, nursing and paramedical students, and people living with HIV.

The events aim to raise awareness, promote testing, and foster community responsibility in fighting HIV/AIDS.
