Meghalaya: Poacher arrested for killing barking deer in Garo Hills

Guwahati: The forest department officials in the South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya arrested a poacher who has been accused of hunting an endangered barking deer.

As per reports, the accused has been identified as Sukumar Rema (52).

Rema, a resident of New Harigaon village near Mukdangra, is accused of killing a critically endangered barking deer.

Following a week-long investigation, the forest department apprehended Rema from his residence.

They also recovered a portion of the deer carcass.

The investigation further suggests Rema intended to consume the meat and potentially sell the deer's skin.

The department is further investigating the involvement of the accused in other similar activities in the district.
