Meghalaya: MeECL might implement "Equal Pay for Equal Work", reviewing HC order

Guwahati: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is currently reviewing a recent High Court judgment mandating the corporation to implement "equal pay for equal work" for its employees.

A report from The Shillong Times stated a senior official from the Power Department confirmed that MeECL's legal team is analyzing the court's decision and will take appropriate action based on their findings.

This judgment is expected to benefit over 1,300 casual and contractual workers at MeECL. These workers include cleaners, peons, lower divisional assistants, meter readers, bill clerks, linemen, and junior divisional assistants.

The MeECL Progressive Workers' Union (MPWU) had filed a petition on behalf of its members.

The High Court's single bench issued an order on July 15th directing MeECL to ensure that its listed union members receive equal pay for equal work compared to permanent staff performing similar duties.

Justice Diengdoh stipulated that MeECL must comply within two months of receiving a certified copy of the judgment.

MPWU president Mantiphrang Lyngdoh Kiri hailed the verdict as a historic moment.
