Guwahati: Sanjay Jaju, Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), is in Meghalaya on a two-day visit to assess major infrastructure and tourism projects, along with reviewing collaboration efforts between the Union government and the state administration.

As part of his visit, he conducted a meeting with the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya along with other senior officials to examine the status of key projects funded by MDoNER. The discussions centred on current progress and ways to speed up development activities in the region.

Along with the Joint Secretary of MDoNER and senior representatives from the state administration, Jaju also toured several project locations under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) in the New Shillong Township.

During the inspection, the team reviewed important works such as a four-lane road project and the planned Unity Mall at Umsawli.

Officials stated that the purpose of the visit is to ensure that ongoing projects are completed on time and to strengthen collaboration between central and state agencies for boosting infrastructure and economic growth in the region.

Sources from the North Eastern Council said that the Secretary assessed a set of 16 projects approved between the financial years 2022–23 and 2025–26. These projects have a total sanctioned cost of Rs 1,411.58 crore, which is higher than the standard allocation of Rs 1,262 crore.

As part of its development push, the Centre is keeping a close watch on how projects are being implemented.
