SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has announced plans to intensify its efforts to check the documents of migrant workers in Meghalaya, despite ongoing police actions against its members.

KSU vice-president Biangbor Paliar stated, “We see the government trying to harass our members by summoning them to police stations daily.”

“We want to send a clear message that we will continue to intensify document checks on migrant workers to ensure the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA),” Paliar said.

His statement came while he was accompanying two KSU members, Malki Circle president Iashan Mukhim and assistant general secretary Mavian Jyrwa, who were summoned to the Shillong Sadar police station following a suo motu FIR filed against them.

The FIR alleges their involvement in a recent assault on labourers.

Iashan Mukhim asserted that the FIR was based on unfounded allegations.

“The action taken is seen as an attempt to discourage and threaten us. We will not be threatened; this will only encourage us to continue our demand to the Centre for the implementation of ILP and the state government for the implementation of the MRSSA to check the unabated influx into the state,” he said.
