Guwahati: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has strongly condemned the Meghalaya government alleging it of misusing power in appointing the new State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) chairperson.

It may be mentioned Agatha K Sangma, sister of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was appointed as the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

KHNAM Working President Thomas Passah accused the government of prioritizing political interests over the welfare of children.

He claimed that Agatha Sangma's appointment is a clear display of nepotism and lacked merit.

He further questioned her qualifications for the role, citing a government notification that requires the chairperson to be a person of eminence with a track record of promoting child welfare.

Passah also criticized alliance partners of the MDA for their silence on the matter, suggesting that they have been compromised by receiving their own share of government appointments.

He added that such actions undermine the integrity of the commission and jeopardize the future of children in the state.

The KHNAM has urged the government to reconsider the appointment and prioritize the welfare of children over political interests.
