Meghalaya: Khasi Authors' Society steps up fight for language recognition

Guwahati: The Khasi Authors' Society (KAS) is ramping up efforts to achieve national recognition for the Khasi language and establishing it as an official language within Meghalaya.

Following their general council meeting, KAS President DRL Nonglait announced plans to increase awareness about the Khasi language throughout the Khasi-Jaintia and Ri Bhoi regions.

This initiative aims to build public support for the language's inclusion in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Nonglait also revealed plans to meet with the new Indian government once it's formed to advocate for Khasi's inclusion in the prestigious schedule.

Additionally, KAS will be following up with the Meghalaya state government to make Khasi an official language alongside English.

The meeting also addressed broader societal concerns. KAS members discussed how writers can address critical issues like drug abuse, HIV, and corruption through their work.

Nonglait announced significant progress on a crucial project: a Khasi-English dictionary.

The initiative, backed by the Department of Arts and Culture and the KHADC, is on track for completion next year.
