Meghalaya: Govt mandates driver and conductor details in all commercial vehicles
Guwahati: The Meghalaya Transport Department has announced that all commercial passenger vehicles in the state must display the names and contact details of drivers and conductors, aiming to improve passenger safety and accountability, according to a report by The Shillong Times.
The directive, issued in a notification dated September 23, 2025, applies to taxis, auto-rickshaws, buses, national permit passenger vehicles, tourist vehicles, and school or institutional transport vehicles.
According to the notification, vehicle permit holders are required to clearly show the driver’s name, driving licence number, contact number, and permanent address in both English and a regional language.
In vehicles employing conductors, their details must also be displayed.
The information should be placed on the dashboard or the back of the front seat for easy visibility. Existing permit holders have been given 30 days to comply with the order.
The department said the move has been introduced in the public interest to ensure transparency and strengthen passenger protection across Meghalaya’s commercial transport services.
