Guwahati: To enhance sports infrastructure and nurture local talent, the Meghalaya government is aiming for new sports facilities and initiatives.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the state has seen a nearly five-fold increase in sports infrastructure since 2018, with 275 new structures completed or under construction.

The government has invested substantially in sports infrastructure, with ongoing projects worth Rs 1,000 crore.

Additionally, a funding scheme has been introduced to support local football clubs, with elite clubs receiving Rs 2 crore in grants and Rs 1 crore in sponsorship.

Grassroots and intermediate clubs will also be eligible for funding up to Rs 15 lakh.

Furthermore, the government plans to establish a residential football academy in partnership with NorthEast United FC, which will be a first-of-its-kind facility in the Northeast.

Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri also announced the upcoming launch of Mission Football 2.0, aimed at promoting football and other sports in the state.
