Meghalaya: Former GNLA camps transformed into tourist destinations in Garo Hills

Guwahati: Former militant camps belonging to the disbanded Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) have reportedly been converted into tourist spots in the South Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

Cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma credited the improvement in security to the six-year-old MDA government.

He claimed that the positive transformation in Garo Hills is now "like heaven" due to the prevailing peace.

Sangma further stated that there was a significant increase in tourism, attracting visitors from within the state, other parts of India, and even abroad.

He emphasized a specific location, formerly a GNLA camp, that has been successfully converted into a tourist destination.

This initiative has reportedly created new livelihood opportunities for locals through tourism-related services.

The minister also mentioned a decrease in requests for financial assistance due to the economic benefits generated by tourism.
