Guwahati: The festive spirit of Dol Utsav turned tragic on Tuesday, March 3, after two young men from Guwahati drowned at a waterfall along the Assam–Meghalaya border. What began as a day of celebration ended in grief for their families and friends.

The incident took place at Ganapati Waterfalls in Meghalaya, near the inter-state border with Assam. According to preliminary reports, five friends from Guwahati had gone on a short holiday trip and stopped at the popular waterfall spot to celebrate.

All five friends had entered the water to bathe when two of them suddenly went missing. The remaining members of the group conducted an immediate search but failed to trace them, following which they alerted the authorities.

Police responded promptly and launched a search operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the site. Personnel from Meghalaya Police and Assam Police carried out a coordinated rescue effort.

After an intensive search, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two youths from between rocks in the water, officials said.

Authorities identified the deceased as Jayrani Wari and Wenar Bodo, residents of Kharghuli in Guwahati. Meghalaya Police shifted the bodies to a hospital in Nongpoh for post-mortem examination.
