Meghalaya contractors' body urges KHADC to tighten trading licence rules for non-locals

Guwahati: The Meghalaya Alliance of Contractors and Suppliers Welfare Association met the Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday, May 28, urging stricter controls on the issuance of trading licences to firms and individuals from outside the state.
The delegation sought an end to the practice of allowing non-local entities to take up projects that local contractors and suppliers are already capable of executing.
They stressed that indigenous entrepreneurs should be given preference to ensure they are not excluded from contracting and business opportunities within the state.
The association also called for certain categories of work, including small supply contracts and minor construction projects, to be set aside exclusively for local firms.
According to them, such a policy would help boost the local economy and create more employment opportunities for young people.
They further pushed for stronger enforcement and monitoring of rules governing trading activities by non-tribal entities.
The group reiterated that local businesses should be supported in sectors where they already have adequate expertise and capacity.
After the meeting, the delegation expressed optimism that the council would consider their demands and take steps to protect the interests of local entrepreneurs.
