Guwahati: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H Pala said that the Congress can replicate its success in the MP election in the upcoming Gambegre by-poll, provided party leaders and workers put in extra effort.

This comes amidst the National People's Party's (NPP) claim that its candidate, Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, will win the seat by a record margin.

Pala pointed out that the ruling party often boasts, but Congress is capable of retaining Gambegre after its significant win in the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

Congress's Saleng A Sangma secured 383,919 votes, defeating Agatha K Sangma, who received 228,678 votes.

Despite having 18 MLAs from the Garo Hills, the NPP failed to protect the late Purno A Sangma's stronghold, which his family held since 1977. Pala acknowledged that winning elections is challenging and requires hard work.

The BJP refuted the NPP's claim, stating that the poor villagers' deprivation would harm the Conrad K Sangma-led party.
