Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on December 11 inaugurated the construction of the Mawkhanu Football Stadium Complex by laying its concrete foundation at New Shillong. Once completed, the project is poised to become the largest football stadium in India.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, Sangma announced that the proposed stadium “will stand as the largest football stadium in the country.”

On the same day, the chief minister initiated another significant sports project — a synthetic athletic track at Chinchona, Pahamsyiem in Ri-Bhoi district. Officials expect the new facility to substantially upgrade the region’s sports ecosystem by giving young athletes improved spaces for training and competition.

Sangma noted that the athletic track “will significantly enhance the sports infrastructure in the region and provide young, aspiring athletes with access to improved training facilities.”

The two major foundation-laying ceremonies signal Meghalaya’s expanded commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure. With the Mawkhanu Football Stadium Complex set to become the nation’s premier football venue, the state positions itself as an emerging hub for high-quality sporting facilities.
