Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirmed his government’s dedication to protecting and promoting the state’s rich cultural traditions on Thursday, while attending the 49th Wangala Festival, the annual post-harvest thanksgiving celebration of the Garo community.

At the event, also known as the “100 Drums Festival,” Sangma expressed pride in Meghalaya’s vibrant heritage and emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to preserve it.

He noted that several initiatives are underway to support research on indigenous cultures, focusing on documenting and promoting the traditional practices of various communities.

The Wangala Festival, celebrated after the harvest season, honours Misi Saljong, the Sun God, for a fruitful harvest.

The celebration features rhythmic drum performances, traditional dances, and colourful attire, reflecting the Garo people’s deep bond with nature and their agricultural lifestyle.

During the event, the Chief Minister announced the formation of a committee to study the historical migration of the Garos from Tibet to the Northeast to trace their ancestral roots.

He also praised the organising committee and performers for keeping this cultural tradition alive for nearly five decades.

Sangma announced that the government has sanctioned Rs 20 crore to construct an approach road to Wangala A’dam to enhance connectivity to the festival venue.

He also handed over Rs 25 lakh to the organisers for this year’s celebration and assured full government support for the grand Golden Jubilee edition next year.

The Wangala Festival highlights themes of unity, gratitude, and cultural pride.
