Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated a shelter home for destitute and abandoned women at Mawïong Rim, while announcing a grant of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) to support its functioning.

The facility, named Nabon Memorial Home, has been set up by the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery under the Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery. It aims to provide safe shelter, care, and rehabilitation support to vulnerable women in the region.

The home is named in honour of Ka Nabon, regarded as the first Christian woman in the Khasi Hills. Calling the naming a meaningful tribute, Sangma said it reflects “courage, faith, and service.”

Describing the initiative as a significant step towards social welfare, the Chief Minister said the shelter would act as a haven of hope and compassion. “This home will provide destitute and abandoned women with a secure environment where they can live with dignity, safety, and proper care,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Sangma interacted with 41 meritorious students from Child Care Institutions under the Social Welfare Department and presented them with cash awards in recognition of their academic performance.

In a notable gesture, he also pledged personal support for the students’ secondary education through the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, acknowledging the challenges many of them face. “These children inspire us and remind us that circumstances should not limit our aspirations, but motivate us to pursue our dreams,” he said.
