Guwahati: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has given North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya, Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla an ultimatum to make amends or quit.

VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit warned that the party "will not sit idle" if Shukla fails to take corrective steps.

Shukla has been accused of having a "dictatorial attitude" and "anti-local policy," which has harmed faculty members, students, and non-teaching staff.

The VPP opposed Shukla's alleged favouritism towards outsiders, ignoring local faculty and staff.

There were grievances regarding the appointment of Colonel Omkar Singh, a former army officer without administrative experience, as controller of examination.

It was alleged that Singh got a subsequent promotion to registrar despite failing to deliver.

They also stated that the appointment of a retired professor on the NEHU Tura campus was "a total waste" ¹.

Shukla defended the appointment of the ex-army officer, citing a seven-member selection committee's recommendation.

He stated that the committee consists of external experts, including a Presidential nominee and another university's registrar.

Prabha Shankar Shukla took office as NEHU Vice-Chancellor on July 27, 2021.

He is a scientist in agriculture, specializing in Seed Science and Technology.
