Meghalaya: VPP alleges dynastic politics after Agatha's MSCPCR appointment

Guwahati: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has accused the Meghalaya state government of promoting dynastic politics and nepotism, following the appointment of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's sister, Agatha Sangma, as chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR).

Agatha Sangma's appointment, officially notified for a three-year term, was justified by the state government based on her experience in politics and qualifications.

However, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh criticized the decision, stating that it reveals the government's focus on advancing the interests of a single-family and those connected to them.

Myrboh questioned Agatha Sangma's ability to act independently, citing potential conflicts between loyalty to her brother, the Chief Minister, and the demands of her new role.

He claimed that there was a need for independence from the Executive to effectively lead the commission.

The VPP spokesperson further criticized the commission appointments, suggesting they have become opportunities for politicians to secure employment rather than protecting the rights of those they serve.

He deemed this a wasteful use of public funds.
