Shillong: A vital bridge in South Garo Hills, Meghalaya collapsed after two allegedly overloaded trucks attempted to cross it simultaneously.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning near Dimapara in South Garo Hills.

The bridge was a key link between West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts.

The 60-meter iron bridge located 6 kilometres from Dalu, is designated for lighter traffic and restricts heavy vehicles.

However, despite the restrictions, two 18-wheeler trucks laden with sugar attempted to cross the bridge, causing its collapse.

The sugar bags on the trucks were scattered all around the area where the bridge collapsed.

A major portion of the cargo across fell into the Bagla stream below the bridge.

Reports stated that the police have suspected a possible smuggling attempt.

Sources said that the sugar was being transported through an unusual route and hence, there might have been an attempt to smuggle the sugar.

It was further suspected that the consignment was heading towards the border area from Assam.
