Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has instructed the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) to delay the opening of the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital until enabling legislation is enacted.

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh announced this decision after a cabinet meeting, on Friday.

Lyngdoh told the media that the government must oversee critical aspects such as seat allocation, tuition fees and course offerings.

To address these concerns, the Health Department will draft legislation for discussion in the next cabinet meeting.

The proposed Act aims to establish guiding principles for medical colleges in Meghalaya, ensuring transparency and accountability, she stated.

Notably, USTM has already allocated 40 seats for Meghalaya students and requested a Rs 233 crore interest-free loan from the state government.
