Guwahati: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has stated that the Umroi Airport expansion project in Meghalaya is expected to cost around Rs 8,000 crore.

The project aims to enhance travel convenience, generate employment opportunities, and accommodate larger aircraft like the A320 and A321.

Dhar inspected the airport and held a meeting to assess the state government's expansion plans.

He stated that the government was committed to the project, citing the need for a fresh assessment due to inadequate initial reports.

To proceed, the state government must fulfil specific conditions and guidelines set by the Civil Aviation Ministry.

This includes acquiring 16 more acres of land for the airport and six acres for parking bays, to be discussed in the upcoming state Cabinet meeting.

The Airports Authority of India is expected to invest Rs 500 crore, while the state government will handle land acquisition costs.

The expanded airport will operate round-the-clock, offering improved facilities and services.

Currently, over eight daily flights connect passengers to cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, and other Northeastern cities.
