Meghalaya tourism forum rejects Sikkim-style taxi restrictions
Shillong: The Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF) has opposed the All Meghalaya Khasi Tourist Taxi Association's (AMKTTA) proposal to restrict outside-state tourist taxis, citing concerns over potential harm to the state's tourism industry.
MRTF President Alan West Kharkongor argued that adopting the Sikkim model would not work for Meghalaya due to its unique geographical location, being a transit state for residents of Tripura, Mizoram, and Assam.
Kharkongor emphasized that such restrictions would infringe upon the fundamental right to inter-state trade and commerce, as per the Indian Constitution.

Restricting outside-state taxis could lead to a collapse of Meghalaya's tourism sector and harm the economy, the forum said.
Concerns of visitors facing increased costs and hassle due to the need to change vehicles mid-trip were also raised.
The proposal violates the Constitution's provisions on inter-state trade and commerce, the forum said.

The MRTF has submitted a letter to the Tourism Minister outlining its stance and seeking representation on the state government's committee reviewing the proposal.
Kharkongor also highlighted the plight of local drivers, who face harassment at Guwahati airport due to lack of dedicated space and unfair fees.
