Shillong: The Meghalaya government has reportedly planned to pursue permission from Bangladesh to erect a statue of freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem at the Dhaka jail where he was imprisoned.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, accompanied by Arts and Culture Minister Paul Lyngdoh, visited the Dhaka jail on Saturday and discussed the proposal with authorities.

"The government will prioritize communication with Bangladesh to obtain approval," Dhar stated.

However, a hurdle emerged during the visit: Bangladesh currently lacks written records about U Tirot Sing's imprisonment from 1833 to 1835, nor does any memorial exist within the jail.

Undeterred, the Meghalaya delegation pledged to provide records to Bangladesh, ensuring the warrior king's historical presence is acknowledged.

This effort follows the recent unveiling of U Tirot Sing's bust at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka.
