Meghalaya to ramp up surveillance in Shillong by installing 300 FR cameras

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has rolled out an ambitious plan aimed at boosting surveillance in Shillong by installing around 300 cameras equipped with facial recognition technology.

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma informed that this initiative, part of the smart city project, is aimed at deterring criminal activities and augmenting public safety measures in Shillong.

An allocation of Rs 150 crore has been earmarked for the establishment of the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC), Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma informed, indicating that work is already in progress.

He mentioned installation of top-tier cameras at various key junctions, with plans for nearly 300 cameras to be stationed throughout the city, complemented by advanced facial recognition software.

The Meghalaya chief minister expressed optimism about the inauguration of the integrated command centre, slated for July.

He also stated that the expanding camera network would heighten public awareness of being under surveillance.

The Meghalaya CM expressed confidence in the initiative's ability to curb criminal activities in Shillong city.

It may be mentioned here that there has been a considerable rise in petrol bomb attacks in Meghalaya, especially in Shillong city.
