Meghalaya: State machinery for people's benefit, says NPP

Guwahati: The National People's Party (NPP) countering the accusations of misusing state machinery to influence voters in the upcoming Gambegre by-election in Meghalaya, claimed that fulfilling people's demands before the model code of conduct comes into force was within their rights as the ruling party.

Cabinet Minister and NPP Working President Marcuise N Marak stated, "The opposition always makes allegations, but we did development work as the ruling party before the model code of conduct. If the people demand, we will definitely look into it."

He claimed that directing officials to check on incomplete Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) work was his duty, asking, "What's wrong with that?"

Marak criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), their coalition partner, for levelling unfounded allegations to score political points ahead of the by-poll.

He claimed these allegations lacked substance and were merely a tactic to impress the people.

The BJP has accused the NPP of blackmailing people affected by the recent floods in Garo Hills, demanding they join the party to receive relief materials.

However, Marak countered that the BJP has no positive achievements to show the people of Gambegre, leading them to make baseless allegations.
