Meghalaya seeks additional troops to boost security along India-Bangladesh border
New Delhi: In response to rising tensions in neighboring Bangladesh, the Meghalaya government has imposed strict restrictions on cross-border movement along the India-Bangladesh border.
The Meghalaya government has also requested additional security forces to bolster the border's defenses in light of recent attempts to illegally enter Indian territory.
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, after a crucial meeting with union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday, emphasized the importance of tightening security measures along the international border.
"We have urged the Government of India, through the Union Home Minister, to consider deploying additional manpower along the border areas to reinforce security," Sangma stated.
The union home minister assured that the situation would be closely monitored and necessary actions would be taken if required.
The meeting, attended by Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, focused on reviewing the overall security scenario along the international border.
During the meeting, the Meghalaya government briefed the Union Home Minister on the heightened vigilance by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indian Army along the border.
"The BSF and the Army are maintaining a strict watch on the international border, and Meghalaya police are also on high alert," Sangma noted.
To further enhance security, the state has implemented a night curfew along the border areas.
"We have informed the Union Home Minister that no individual should be allowed to cross the border at this time due to the sensitive nature of the situation," Sangma added.
"In-depth discussions were held on this matter, and the Union Home Minister confirmed that the Indian government is committed to ensuring the border remains secure, with no unauthorized movement permitted."
