Meghalaya: Security beefed up in Shillong following arson attacks

SHILLONG: In response to a series of arson attacks targeting government properties, including police stations, security has been significantly reinforced in Shillong and other district headquarters of Meghalaya.

Speaking to the media, deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya, SC Sadhu, stressed on the urgent need to enhance security measures, particularly during night-time.

He stated that discussions were held with the district SP to fortify security arrangements and develop a contingency plan to address the prevailing law and order challenges.

“We are actively deliberating on necessary actions to identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind these attacks,” DC of East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya, SC Sadhu, stated.

Additionally, he informed that advisories have been issued to all government departments and offices, urging them to secure their vehicles and properties, especially by avoiding exposure in open areas.

He expressed optimism that these measures, coupled with strengthened security protocols, would help restore stability and order in Meghalaya within the coming days.

It may be mentioned here that over the past month, Meghalaya has witnessed an escalation in arson incidents, with seven reported cases thus far.

These include multiple petrol bomb attacks targeting various police stations, government offices, and even the residence of a Meghalaya deputy chief minister.
