Guwahati: A recent study by the Praja Foundation and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) has revealed that Meghalaya is the third lowest-performing state in urban governance, after Nagaland and Manipur.

The report, released on Thursday, assessed 43 cities across 28 states and three Union territories, highlighting significant gaps in civic governance.

Shillong, Meghalaya's capital, performed poorly in several urban governance indicators, the report stated.

The report evaluated cities and states based on empowered city-elected representatives, administration, citizens, and fiscal empowerment.

Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya ranked as the worst performers in urban governance.

Kerala, Odisha, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh emerged as the highest performing states.

The study's findings are based on interactions with 2,213 key stakeholders, including elected representatives, administrators, and experts in urban governance and policy, over two years, the report claimed.
