Guwahati: The Meghalaya government's plan to decongest Shillong city is gaining momentum, with the PWD (Buildings) department vacating its official quarters at Barik to create a parking space.

As per an official order, at least nine staff members residing in the quarters, including chowkidars and a driver, were asked to vacate the premises by July 1.

This move aligns with the government's plan to utilize unused government land for public benefit.

The Barik Point property, currently under the General Administration Department (GAD), will also house a towering national flag, reaching up to 50 meters in height.

This initiative builds upon the first phase of decongestion, where underutilized government land was transferred to the Urban Affairs Department for developing parking lots.

Projects are already underway at Ward's Lake, NEIGRIHMS, and near the Forest Department and MeECL offices in Polo.
