Meghalaya police investigate alleged revival of GNLA in Garo Hills

SHILLONG: Meghalaya police has launched an investigation in response to a widely circulated press release on social media, alleging the resurgence of the once-feared Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in the Garo Hills.

Signed by purported GNLA-regroup chairman Goera Pantora Sangma, the press release claims the GNLA's reformation on February 07 last year, outlining resolutions aimed at addressing issues like corruption and implementing welfare schemes for the underprivileged in the region.

Meghalaya deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong, expressed scepticism regarding the authenticity of the report but affirmed that law enforcement would prevent any attempt by the defunct group to reassemble.

“Our police force is prepared to thwart such endeavours,” the Meghalaya deputy chief minister declared, emphasizing the bolstering of security intelligence.

Tynsong assured, “Police presence is robust on the ground. Rest assured, regrouping will be prevented.”

Opposition MLA Saleng Sangma urged the Meghalaya government to ascertain the veracity of the social media release.

He demanded swift action, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible for disseminating the post.

“The Congress party will deliberate on this issue and may bring it up in the assembly,” Sangma added.
