Shillong: The Coordinator of the Mining Affected Area Restoration Project, Naba Bhattacharjee, announced plans to replicate a pilot project aimed at reclaiming and restoring abandoned mines across Meghalaya.

The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) is currently developing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) based on inspections conducted at four sites - two each in the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills regions. These sites encompass both coal and non-coal mining operations.

The urgency of the project is highlighted by the sheer number of abandoned mines in East Jaintia Hills alone, estimated at over 20,000.

"We will assess the CMPDIL's recommendations and the effectiveness of these pilot projects before proceeding with replicating them across other mining sites," said Bhattacharjee after a meeting with CMPDIL officials.

Land acquisition remains a significant challenge, as willing participation from landowners is crucial for the project's success.

Bhattacharjee expressed optimism, stating, "This is a promising start. We will monitor the progress of these pilot projects. The government's decision to replicate and expand the initiative will depend on their success."

The project also identified opportunities to support local communities. Officials visiting South Garo Hills observed cashew and coffee farming activities that could be further bolstered to increase local income.
