Guwahati: Meghalaya Opposition leader, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, has raised concerns over what he deems as a concerted effort to divide the tribal population along religious lines, citing recent events in neighbouring Assam.

Lyngdoh, in a statement, condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's remarks alleging Christian missionaries' involvement in conversion activities.

Lyngdoh accused Sarma of propagating hatred and undermining constitutional rights to religious freedom.

He criticized the alleged targeting of specific faiths for political gain, cautioning against the erosion of India's social fabric.

The issue gained traction during the recent Budget session of the Assembly, with UDP MLA Mayralborn Syiem highlighting the growing apprehension among border residents in the Marmain area of Ri-Bhoi.
