Meghalaya: New bypass to ease traffic congestion between Shillong and Umroi

SHILLONG: Commuters between Shillong and Umroi in Meghalaya can rejoice as a new road bypassing the congested Umiam bridge is under construction, promising smoother and faster journeys.

This project, envisioned by Mawlai MDC Teiborlang Pathaw in 2010, aims to address the growing traffic burden on the Umiam bridge.

The existing route via Mawlai Mawtawar posed challenges due to steep inclines, making it unsuitable for heavy traffic.

The new bypass will traverse through Umsaw Mawjynrong, Umjathang, and Madan Nonglakhiat, offering a gentler and more efficient alternative.

After planning and site visits, the state government received approval from the North Eastern Council (NEC) for funding under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme.

The project boasts a total length of 14.279 km and carries a price tag of Rs 34 crore. Upon completion, it will benefit air passengers travelling to Umroi Airport from Shillong with quicker commutes.

It will also significantly reduce the pressure on the Umiam bridge and dam.
