Meghalaya: KHADC delimitation committee nears completion

Guwahati: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya announced on Tuesday that the ongoing delimitation exercise is nearing completion, and a report on its progress will be sent to the state government soon.

This committee's responsibility is to ensure an equal distribution of voters across the council's 29 constituencies by adjusting their boundaries.

The update comes after the state government wrote to KHADC requesting the delimitation committee's report at the earliest.

Deputy CEM PN Syiem confirmed receipt of the letter and explained that the committee had been informed.

He clarified that extending the committee's term beyond its current mandate would require approval from the Governor and the state government.

Syiem also revealed that the committee has finished roughly half of its work and needs more time to finalize the report. He emphasized the significant disparity in voter numbers between different constituencies, highlighting the necessity of the delimitation exercise.

Wearing his other hat as the working president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, Syiem stated that the party has no objection and awaits the state election machinery's decision regarding conducting elections for the district council.

He acknowledged the possibility of extending the current House's term, but only if the elections are held based on the newly delimited constituencies.

Both the KHADC and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council's current House terms are set to expire on March 5.
