Guwahati: The Meghalaya government might appoint Idashisha Nongrang, a 1992-batch IPS officer, as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) after incumbent DGP Lajja Ram Bishnoi retires on May 19, 2024.

Bishnoi will be completing his two-year term as the Director General of Meghalaya Police as per the notification issued on December 2nd, 2022.

The decision to appoint an acting DGP comes due to the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections, which bar the SSC from convening to select a permanent replacement.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had previously recommended three candidates for the DGP post, including Nongrang himself.

The three candidates are all from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. They include Idashisha Nongrang (1992 batch), Ram Prasad Meena (1993), and Deepak Kumar (1994).

Of them, Nongrang had already served as acting DGP in December 2021 following the retirement of the then-state police chief.

It may be mentioned that the permanent replacement is expected to take place following the elections.
