Meghalaya ILP issue: HYC pushes for anti-influx measures

Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) reaffirmed its commitment to press both the central and Meghalaya governments for implementation of robust anti-influx measures, including the inner line permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

HYC president Roykupar Synrem stated: “ILP and MRSSA, which are two crucial anti-influx mechanisms, are yet to be enforced in Meghalaya despite strong demands from all quarters.”

“The government’s failure to address the influx issue has undoubtedly led to anger and frustration among the people of the state, especially the youth,” Synrem stated.

Synrem announced that the HYC would increase pressure on the Meghalaya government to push the Centre for the immediate implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya.

He stated that the HYC has been persistently following up with the Meghalaya government on the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Bill, 2020, aimed at regulating the entry of outsiders into the state.

The absence of effective anti-influx mechanisms has significantly impacted the indigenous population, Synrem said.

“We demand the state government introduce laws, policies, and mechanisms to protect the socio-economic and political interests of the indigenous people,” he added.

Additionally, the HYC president called for the Meghalaya government to urge the Centre to expedite the inclusion of the Khasi language in the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India.
