Guwahati: The traditional council of Laitkynsew village, Laitkynsew Dorbar in Meghalaya has raised serious concerns about an alleged illegal stone quarry operating on top of the Wahniangleng reservoir.

This reservoir is the primary source of water for entire Shillong through the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.

As per reports, Rangbah Shnong Rangshel Myrthong, head of the Dorbar stated that there were no records of any permission ever being granted for the quarry.

He said that the quarry was started over 15 years ago by the former Sordar of Elaka Laitkroh, completely bypassing the village council and potentially acting illegally.

The quarry, currently managed by the former Sordar's wife, reportedly exports truckloads of boulders to Bangladesh on a daily basis.

The matter is currently under investigation and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) also has no record of issuing any for this area. The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPSCB) is investigating due to potential environmental concerns, while the Forest Department is examining the case as it involves soil extraction.

This investigation aims to determine the legality of the quarry and take necessary actions to protect the vital water source for Shillong.
