Meghalaya: IIM-Shillong to host Gati Shakti Research Chair focused on NE logistics

Shillong: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong in Meghalaya is set to establish the country's first-ever "Gati Shakti Research Chair," a collaborative initiative with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW).

This chair aims to spearhead research efforts focused on developing a multimodal logistics strategy for the North Eastern Region (NER), ultimately strengthening the region's economic potential.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (developed India).

He highlighted the government's focus on improving connectivity in the Northeast, citing successful infrastructure projects undertaken in recent years.

Sonowal further acknowledged the demographic advantage of India's young population and urged students from institutions like IIMs to contribute to national development.

He emphasized the strategic and economic significance of the NER, given its international borders and access to waterways like the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers.

Atul Kulkarni, a member of the Board of Governors (BoG), stressed the importance of improving connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and establishing a seamless framework for goods movement within the region.

He also highlighted the need for a comprehensive logistics network master plan for the entire NER.

Professor DP Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, highlighted the institute's commitment to knowledge generation and dissemination throughout its 15-year journey.
