Meghalaya HC seeks update on CCTV, speed sensors from Govt
Guwahati: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to provide a detailed status report on the implementation of road safety measures, including the activation of CCTV cameras and Automatic Speed Detection Devices, to curb rash driving and overspeeding in Shillong.
The court's directive came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by legal activist Romilton Pahsyntiew, highlighting the lack of enforcement of traffic safety measures in the city.

During the hearing, the court noted that despite the government's earlier assurances, no progress had been made in activating the CCTV cameras and speed detection devices.
The court has asked the government to provide exact timelines for the implementation of these measures and has also allowed the petitioner to submit additional information on traffic hazards in the city.

The government had earlier proposed to install over 300 CCTV cameras with facial recognition features and Automatic Speed Detection devices to regulate traffic and reduce crimes.
However, the court's directive suggests that these measures are yet to be implemented.
