Meghalaya HC receives interim reports on illegal coal mining

Guwahati: The one-man inquiry commission led by Justice (retired) BP Katakey has submitted its 23rd and 24th interim reports to the Meghalaya High Court, shedding light on the ongoing issue of illegal coal mining in the state.

During the hearing, the court was informed that a significant amount of coal remains in East Jaintia Hills, awaiting transportation to the designated depot.

Advocate General Amit Kumar clarified that some of this coal may be under the custody of the Judicial Magistrate, seized under Section 21 of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

The High Court has directed the respondents to file their comments on the 23rd interim report and provide photographs of the location where the coal is stored.

The matter has been adjourned until September 12, 2024, to allow for further investigation and submission of necessary documents.
