Meghalaya Govt refutes Finance Ministry's GST collection data
Guwahati: Contrary to the Ministry of Finance's report of a decline in GST collections, the Meghalaya government has asserted a steady growth in GST revenues.
The state's Finance Department clarified that GST collections have increased from Rs 1,118 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 1,723 crore in 2023-24, representing a significant growth rate of 35.87 per cent, 32.12 per cent and 16.66 per cent over the past three years.

The department attributed the reported dip in GST collections to a single month's data and emphasized that overall collections, including State GST, Integrated GST, and Central GST, demonstrate a consistent upward trend.
Meghalaya's GST growth rate surpasses that of several neighbouring states, with a 5 per cent increase in receipts from April to August 2024 compared to the same period last year.

To address concerns of evasion, the government said it was intensifying scrutiny of returns and conducting awareness campaigns, particularly among small shopkeepers, to ensure accurate invoicing and GST accruals.
With 376 cases under scrutiny involving Rs 121 crore, the state is committed to optimizing GST collections and revenue growth.
