Meghalaya: Govt ask for detailed report of PA Sangma Stadium wall collapse

Guwahati: The retaining wall of the PA Sangma Stadium in Tura, Meghalaya, collapsed for the second time in less than a year on Sunday.

The Hindustan Steelworks Construction Ltd (HSCL), the company responsible for building the sports complex, has been asked to submit a detailed report on the incident.

The stadium was inaugurated in December 2022 in a rush, ahead of the February 2023 Assembly elections. Locals had raised concerns about the quality of construction at the time.

According to the Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, Isawanda Laloo, the collapsed wall was a temporary outer boundary structure near an under-construction sewage treatment plant and indoor hall.

He claimed the main stadium structure remains unaffected.

The government blamed heavy rains for overwhelming the temporary drainage system, leading to a "water catastrophe."

Laloo said permanent drainage solutions are yet to be installed as construction is ongoing.

The collapsed wall was reportedly built to prevent encroachment on the land.

The West Garo Hills district administration has taken steps to ensure the safety of nearby residents. One family affected by the collapse has been relocated to temporary accommodation.

The area has been secured, and officials are working to clear clogged pipes and remove debris.
