Meghalaya Governor says drug abuse turning in silent epidemic
Shillong: Meghalaya Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar has warned that drug abuse has become a "silent epidemic" threatening the future of the state's youth.
Speaking at a workshop on drug abuse held at Raj Bhavan, the Governor emphasized the socio-economic, cultural, and law-and-order implications of substance abuse.
Vijayashankar stressed the need for collective action to combat drug abuse, involving government agencies, law enforcement, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and civil society.
He urged youth to take an active role in raising awareness and advocating for a drug-free lifestyle.
NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla also acknowledged the significant impact of drug abuse on Meghalaya's youth, while Michael Syngkon of Manbha Foundation shared insights on rehabilitating individuals affected by addiction.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya government has already launched the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM) to eliminate substance use and establish a drug-free society.
