Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the Meghalaya government has decided to allocate approximately Rs 400 crore for the construction of 100 reservoirs within the next three years.

This announcement came during the inauguration of the Mawrah Multi-Purpose Water Reservoir at Mawrah village in East Khasi Hills.

Chief Minister Sangma emphasized his government's unwavering commitment to water conservation and the establishment of new reservoirs.

He highlighted that only a minimal 4-5 per cent of the rainwater is retained by the state, with the remainder flowing into neighbouring regions like Bangladesh or Assam.

To address this drainage issue and preserve water, Sangma stressed the importance of constructing dams and water reservoirs, citing the recently inaugurated Mawrah project as an example.

Commending the successful implementation of the project by the Soil and Water Conservation Department, Sangma outlined the various benefits the Mawrah reservoir will bring to the region, including the promotion of tourism and the advancement of aquaculture and farming.

Construction of the reservoir, which began in April 2021 for Rs 1.50 crore funded by NABARD, also received additional funds from the State Plan and Meghalayan Age Ltd.

These funds were allocated for the construction of essential infrastructure such as a footbridge over the dam, approach roads, footpaths, and a boating platform.
