Shillong: In a significant move aimed at creating job opportunities for local youth, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma announced on Wednesday that the state government will soon begin appointing locals as ‘Tourist Assistants’ in a phased manner.

These semi-uniformed personnel will take on the roles of tour guides, security providers, and information sources for tourists visiting the state.

“The goal is to make tourists feel safe and ensure they receive accurate information,” said Meghalaya chief minister Sangma during a consultation with tourism stakeholders at the State Convention Centre in Shillong.

Addressing recent law and order issues that have impacted the tourism sector, Sangma emphasized the need for collective action to restore confidence among visitors.

“We must work together to condemn such incidents and promote a positive environment for tourism,” he urged.

The Meghalaya chief minister highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to engage traditional leaders, local organizations, and stakeholders in discussions aimed at boosting the state's tourism industry.

“Over the past six years, the government has introduced various initiatives to position and brand Meghalaya as a top tourist destination,” he noted.

Sangma called on stakeholders to contribute ideas for further enhancing the state's tourism ecosystem.

“Our aim is not only to increase tourist footfall but also to create unique tours and circuits that offer an enriched experience,” he added.

In addition to these initiatives, the Meghalaya government is making significant investments in upgrading tourism infrastructure across the state.

This includes the development of hotels, resorts, restaurants, promenades, and amenities such as skywalks and museums.

Key tourist destinations, including Shillong, are receiving facelifts with new infrastructure to enhance their aesthetic appeal.

During the conclave, Chief Minister Sangma, along with Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, unveiled the much-anticipated autumn tourism calendar.

The calendar features key events such as the Shillong Literary Festival (November 12-14), Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival (November 15-16), Me’gong Festival (November 29-30), The Hills Festival (December 6-7), Bryan Adams India Tour (December 10), and Winter Tales (December 12-14).

In a significant cultural exchange, the Meghalaya government also announced an official partnership with Japan for the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival.

As part of this collaboration, a special Japan Zone will be created, showcasing the diversity and rich cultural heritage of Japan.
