TURA: Employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in Meghalaya initiated a three-day strike on Monday (February 26), demanding resolution of pending salary issues that have persisted despite weeks of waiting for a commitment from authorities.

Led by the Non Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA), staff members assembled at the Tura Government College field in Tura in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya to voice their grievances.

With banners and placards calling for the release of 32 months' worth of unpaid dues, NGEA leaders expressed frustration over the Council Executive Committee's failure to respond positively despite repeated appeals.

NGEA president Brithin M Sangma addressed the protesters, expressing their willingness to engage in dialogue with council authorities to address the issue.

The employees have planned a sit-in demonstration from 10 AM to 4 PM for three consecutive days.

The strike has effectively halted all council operations, leaving workspaces vacant and significantly impacting revenue collection, particularly in land revenue and water tax.

Due to restrictions imposed by the West Garo Hills district administration in Meghalaya, the protest is being held at the college field instead of the previous demonstration site outside the main GHADC office in Tura.
