Guwahati: In a move that may further delay elections for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya, council members decided today to refer the delimitation committee's report to a House select committee.

This decision was made during the first day of KHADC's monsoon session.

The delimitation committee submitted its report to the KHADC executive committee on July 8, recommending voter redistribution in several constituencies.

Deputy Chief Executive Member Pynshngain N. Syiem presented the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Amendment Rules 2024, which aligned with the committee's recommendations.

However, opposition leader and Sohra MDC Titos Chyne urged the executive committee to avoid rushing the amendment's passage.

Chyne suggested that both the delimitation report and the amendment rules be sent to the House Select Committee for further review.

"We are not against the delimitation report," Chyne clarified. "But since members only received the report today, it needs thorough examination. Referring it to the select committee is the best course of action", Chyne said.

Chyne's proposal gained support from UDP MDCs Balajied Rani, Jambor War, and Lambor Malngiang, Congress MDC Gabriel Wahlang, and independent MDC Latiplang Kharkongor.

Following these suggestions, Deputy CEM Pynshngain Syiem agreed to the referral.
