Shillong: The Meghalaya government has constituted a committee to resolve the long-standing issue of local tourist taxi drivers demanding exclusive rights to ferry tourists within the state.

Chaired by the Director of Tourism, the committee comprises members from various departments, including Tourism, Law, police, and district administration.

Local taxi drivers have been adamant that only they should be allowed to transport tourists from Shillong to other parts of Meghalaya, restricting out-of-state taxis to only bringing tourists up to Shillong.

However, the government has been hesitant to implement this plan due to concerns about restricting taxis with national or regional permits, reports claimed.

The committee is tasked to conduct a comprehensive analysis of tourist numbers, the impact on local drivers, and potential solutions.

According to Sangma, the goal is to make an informed decision after assessing the situation and hearing concerns from all stakeholders.
