Meghalaya: Coal-rich areas eagerly await for scientific mining, says Shylla

Guwahati: Citizens in the coal-rich regions, such as East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, are eagerly anticipating the resumption of mining activities, according to Khliehriat MLA and cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla.

The National Green Tribunal's 2014 ban on rat-hole coal mining led to a decade-long halt in the industry, forcing locals to seek alternative livelihoods.

Shylla highlighted the struggles of ordinary people in East Jaintia Hills, who have been trying to survive through agriculture and other means.

However, with the advent of scientific mining, there is hope for the region to regain its economic stability.

A recent public hearing in Byndihati showed overwhelming support for mining, with residents eager to see its resumption. Shylla noted that the public is willing to adapt to changes and requests government support for a smooth transition.

Additionally, Shylla emphasized the importance of shifting to organic farming practices, citing the benefits for health and livelihoods.

He encouraged the utilization of unused land in the state for farming, highlighting the potential for economic growth.
